Star of Bethlehem is the very first essence I worked with a little over twenty years ago. I had just come out as a lesbian and was receiving a daily onslaught of shocking and violent phone and email messages from my extended family. I had never even heard of a flower essence but felt drawn to a small display of essences in my local pharmacy. To “neutralize grief” the bottle said. I took one drop and the effect was immediate. I felt a profound sense of consolation. A comfort that was both from within my self and also outside of my self but deeply entangled with my beingness. I had never felt this way before. It was like what I hoped prayer could be. A comfort, a communion. Fear and despair transmuted into organized, soothing energy. Light coherence. That is the gift of Star of Bethlehem.
The flowers of this essence are from the land that the Barn lives on. 8 years ago, I went on a walk after receiving some shocking news and I came upon one single Star of Bethlehem plant growing along the side of the road here in my village about a mile from our home. Across the years, I’ve watched them begin to bloom all over town. Any herbalist will tell you to read your landscape for messages from Earth. Yes, Star of Bethlehem is “invasive,” (a troubling term perhaps I’ll write about at another time) but its arrival across town and soon in my very yard tells me that this flower’s gifts are profound and can be a comfort and guide in this time.
